I am trying to enable Wake on lan for a PC. However, I have noticed that the NIC is turning off. It is my media PC an ASUS motherboard and onboard NIC. My PC, also ASUS and also has onboard NIC, does not turn off. WTF. I have changed every setting I can find and the NIC will not stay on. Any suggestions?

First thing that springs to mind is different chip different drivers, windows is probably shutting the NIC off on shutdown. I have seen this problem before, it was either my soundcard or NIC. Anyway try different drivers if you can or just pull the plug once its working, if it fixes it u know thats deffo the problem.

PS, If you go to configure that NIC in windows where is has things like MAC, and data rate etc. Is there an option for wake on lan or something to that effect to keep it from being turned off?

I updated the drivers on the Nic. I have enabled WOL which is what I am trying to get working. I have disable the settings for "allow computer to turn off device to save power". The NIC still turns off. Someone told me to update the BIOS but i feel like that isnt right. Worth a try i guess.

Hmmmm that is strange its turning off even tho you have told windows to keep it on, if it is indeed listening to you and not turning it off, the BIOS might indeed be the culprit. To eliminate the OS possibility can you try a linux live cd, make sure its working then power down from that and see if it still turns off. Does the NIC have a flash? it could be a buggy firmware... but that's very unlikely and the last thing to persue.
