Not minding the PvP element is the mentality that's starting to kill off majority of MMOs, Eve's growing, everything else is falling apart except WoW since a 5 year old can figure out what the 1-10 keys do.
Without a purpose to creating a changing world via killing people and their assets, why are you paying a company 15$ a month to kill computers? Guild Wars didnt need to do it and it still had a decent PvP element, but it was geared for instanced story telling, did it well, and was a one time fee of 50, FIFTY, dollars, not this "pay 200+ to play for free forever" garbage companies pull out thier butt, you're basically paying for the game (50) and then 10 months if you even play it for that long.
Guild Wars 2? yay?

Hmmmm, I can't put my finger on it, but this sounds strangely familiar, can someone help me with this? I actually haven't read into this much at all and know hardly anything about the game, after reading about the PvP that became pretty much the brick wall for me. But really, if I have to go hunting for 12 year olds to go with me to kill 10 grogglebags at snotsniff swamp, or wait for 2 hours to get a +33/4NM/MM/BB/78*2 healer bitch to join the party to jump into the werewolf castle instance so I can roll for boss loot and have a chance at getting the awesome Helmet of Mana Increase +16, or if 75% of the game revolves around what the hell kind of diseased animal I have to grind that night to reach level 345 to be able to grind in the next zone, or the PvP is essentially only made up of max level characters shoving their e-peen into a level 10 character's fourth point of contact for some kind of faction reputation points to unlock a new cape, then the game should never deserve the right to be called an MMOG. I don't want to think it's fun to travel to the other side of the world map because there are higher level NPCs there, and more missions. I want to feel the chore in it and at the same time feel an overwhelming curiosity at how massive it is, and not just that, I want massive player interaction that goes far beyond helping me kill the instance boss. I want to be motivated to get together with a group of friends and fight other players to minimize the risk of challenging setbacks that are caused by these players, which I think is necessary in virtually any multi-player online game. Does this STO game, with this ever so common potential and possibility, really fit into this genre in the way that it really, honestly should? If not, then why make the guys who made it think that it does? What real sense does it make to pay a man every month to provide you the entertainment that a 10 year old child craves? That's all I want to know about this . If this wasn't Star Trek, then I wouldn't give a damn about it, but (thanks to a slight childhood influence provided by Mr. RisenStar) I would like to see something unique built out of a game based upon this science fiction series. If not, then for shame on those who make developers think that this is what should be included in an MMOG.

Nice post Godfroi. A couple of misconceptions with regards to the specifics of STO PvP, but generally you understand the differences between STO and EvE. One is a true MMO (sandbox style) and the other is a MO (multiplayer online) instanced game. Although STO is on one server it is sharded excessively. EvE gets away with this through the system it employs with regards to each system being its own 'shard' (wrong term but for the life of me I can't think of another). Unfortunately due to the nature of STO this wouldn't work as there is only one Sol, Vulcan, Andoria, DS9 etc. These Hubs are specific to the game and cannot be changed or distributed throughout the game world. This means sharding on one server for STO is a necessary evil. At this moment it is those other differences between STO and EvE that are actually drawing me to STO for the moment. Although I like EvE and think highly of it, personally at this moment in time it is not what i need from a game. The more simplified (kidified) STO is.

Lol, leave it to Ash to say it better then me .. One thing I will say, while I totally enjoy the space combat, the ground combat needs sooo much work, the more I play the ground part of it, the more my teeth cringe a bit. However, thank god for the Space Part.

Hey All,
If anyone is still interested in STO since I picked up the collectors edition, it supplied me with 3, 10 Day Trial Guest Passes.
If anyone feels like still checking it out, just drop a PM to me, and I'll supply you the key. (If you were in Open Beta, I think you can use that client as it'll just patch itself)
As to how it's going, well can't really say, as I'm in a total Mass Effect mode at the moment, so once that dies out, I'll be going pretty hardcore into STO then.
Whatever the case, just let me know if anyone is interested.
later,
MP
